The Structure Of An Undergraduate Dissertation: Basic Manual For Students

Anything looks ordinary if not accorded a proper structure. Think about a movie hall and you automatically envision the ticket counter, the washroom; the theaters. A home abides by a structure of a hall opening to a number of rooms which do have an attached washroom. Structuring is important.

A premise you cannot fail

Undergraduate dissertation is not of an extremely exacting kind; but it makes a careful case for structure. While you are not expected to go the whole hog in your Methodology as an undergraduate, you are surly expected to stick to the structural parameters.

The first three pages

The undergraduate dissertation starts with the title page and continues with the abstract and acknowledgement. While the title and acknowledgement pages are self-explanatory, the abstract presents why you have chosen the subject and also where the theme leads.

The Body

Your main dissertation quotient starts from Introduction onwards, which is the fourth part. Here, you define the theme in subtlety and also usher a bit of a background. The next page is Literature Review where you assimilate and analyze the subject in whole. This may actually be bypassed in some cases.

The Methodology

Here is the active part of your dissertation. You labor hard in proving what you started with through sampling and survey. You follow it up with a discussion page, where you assess and cement your Methodology. The follow-up is the Conclusion.

A fitting conclusion

Your conclusion amasses all that you have written in the former pages and gives depth and meaning to the dissertation. It should logically strive towards a solution. You are expected to adumbrate it with a reference page where you give details of all the alignments in the previous pages. This also happens to be the reference page.

The appendix page

The last page is meant for appendices or deliverance of tables and footnotes. This, then, is the wholesome structure of an undergraduate dissertation. You have to follow the guidelines and fill each plot with the right crop. The results will generally be to your liking.

The proposal is optional

If you wish or if the teacher demands so, you can begin with a research proposal. Here, you present your take on the theme and your grip on the subject. You have to convince the teacher that you can easily make laymen understand the topic; such is your authority on the particular theme. You also present the teacher with the time-frame you require for the whole work.
